AJAC in conjunction with its sister company, Acuiti Technical Training recently started offering a mentor training program for shop leads and journey-level workers who serve as mentors on the shop floor at aerospace and advanced manufacturing companies. In only four hours, mentors will gain the tools and techniques needed to pass on their knowledge.
They will learn how to:
• Evaluate competency based learning
• Identify learning styles and strengths of their apprentice
• Define roles and responsibilities of both mentor and apprentice
• Apply performance based assessments
• Develop soft skills
• Practice effective methods for transferring knowledge and skills

For AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings it’s becoming an increasingly regular occurrence for their Base Coat/Clear Coat systems to be selected to paint first editions of customer aircraft.
Airbus, focusing largely on sustainability, has made the decision to utilize the new paint system as it requires less paint and less solvent. These savings are a great endorsement of AkzoNobel’s continued commitment to delivering sustainable solutions to customers worldwide.
“Our colors decorate the first flying A350,” says Jérôme Mancy, EADS Global Key Account Manager. “The aircraft was painted in Toulouse – it’s the first Airbus with both fuselage and wing structures made primarily of composites. We have a very good relationship with Airbus – and many of their aircraft are painted with AkzoNobel coatings.”
CCP Composites will be exhibiting our exciting FIREBLOCK™ product at Aircraft Interiors Expo Americas; a winner of the 2011 JEC Innovation Award, FIREBLOCK™ is a series of non-halogenated, fire-retardant resins and gel coats for a variety of applications. Based on char producing intumescent technology, these intumescent materials swell and produce an oxygen blocking char layer on the composite surface when exposed to flame/heat. The low density and poor thermal conduction of the char layer protects the underlying body of material from damage with continued heat or flame exposure. FIREBLOCK™ meets many industry standards, including FAR 25.853 for aircraft interior parts.

One new product it plans to promote is the 3M™ Fast Tack Water Based Adhesive 1000NF, a high-performance, one-part adhesive formulated for fast bonding. It adheres to many types of flexible foam, fabric, polyester fiberfill, plastic, and metal surfaces.
Ensure easy, accurate, and fast attachment of components in off center applications with the new addition to the RIV-FLOAT® family; RIV-FLOAT®-SHORT. These rivet nuts were developed for use in applications such as replacing riveted nut plates in aircraft interiors. HW Eckhardt will be featuring this innovative product at booth number 623 at the 2013 Aircraft Interiors Expo Americas.
RIV-FLOAT®-SHORT was developed to allow manufacturers the benefit of accounting for tolerance stack up, and resolve alignment issues during product assembly. This saves costly rework of components and the expensive downtime associated with stripped or cross threaded fasteners. RIV-FLOAT®-SHORT also allows installation from the front side of the work piece which improves assembly time by allowing the fasteners to be installed post paint, powder coat or other surface treatment. RIV-FLOAT®-SHORT is being used in aircraft interiors to attach the structures of the galley, overhead bins, armrests and the lavatory.
RIV-FLOAT®-SHORT is the next generation of fastening technology that was designed for post installation inapplications where cage nuts, floating nut plates or weld nuts are typically used. This innovative family of rivet nuts is RoHS compliant and can provide higher thread strength than regular rivet nuts. These breakthrough rivet nuts are installed with the new hydro-pneumatic FLEX-5 Tool. Automated installation systems with process monitoring/control are also available for the RIV-FLOAT®, RIVFLOAT®-SHORT and the full line of HW Eckhardt fasteners.
First-time exhibitor, Replin Fabrics, will be presenting the same demonstration on its stand which was shown during a Royal Visit to the company in June 2013. To showcase recent examples of its aviation and rail fabrics, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were shown a specially treated seat material with half a cup of hot coffee poured all over it. Thanks to the fabric’s liquid repellent and stain-resistant properties, the coffee was wiped away with no stains or traces left behind.
SABIC has recently introduced an important expansion of its LEXAN™ XHR sheet portfolio. The new low gloss LEXAN XHR 6005 sheet brings velvet texture aesthetics after thermoforming for interior applications and the new LEXAN XHR A13 film adds robustness in multilayer laminate constructions used in decorative interior applications.
With its extremely low heat release, LEXAN XHR sheet series can deliver superior weight-out vs. traditional PVC/PMMA products for better fuel economy while fully complying with the OSU 65/65 standard, FST requirements (FAR25.853) of major airlines. It is also qualified for Airbus AIMS04-06-001 material specification and can be color-matched in sheet and resin form.
Available in gauges between 2-7mils, the newly developed film product solution helps build robustness in multilayer lamination constructions that can be used for sidewall panels, ceiling, galleys and partitions.
